Butterflies On Strings are a UK indie pop group formed in London in 2008. The line-up centres on Allan Harrod on vocals and guitar, Patrick Baker on guitar and keys, Stephen Cunningham on bass, who is from Ireland, and Hugh Fox on drums, who is from Scotland.

Formation and line-up

The group begins as an electronic indie duo, with Allan on guitar and Patrick on bass. In that early phase they use programmed synths and electronic drums. Patrick later moves from bass to guitar and keys, and the band expands with the addition of Fox and Cunningham as they reshape their sound.

Activity and profile

Butterflies On Strings are based in London. They appear as Gary Crowley’s London Calling act on his BBC London Radio show, and they are also featured on Gill Mills’ Best of Myspace show. The band is invited to play Danielle Perry and Kate Lawler’s Kerrang & Q Radio night in East London.

Release

Their debut single, “What Did John Stuart Mill Say Again?”, is issued through Rough Trade Records and made available via online stores. The track is described as drawing on Britpop, American indie and melodic, harmony-led songwriting, while also pointing to the energy of the band’s live performances.

Style

Although tagged as indie pop, pop, alternative, electronic and Sigur Rós, the band’s early development moves from electronic indie into a fuller group sound with guitars, bass and drums.
