Bushwacka! is the recording name of Matthew Benjamin, a London-based DJ and producer associated with techno, breakbeat, house and tech house.

Background

Benjamin grows up in Ladbroke Grove, West London, and begins as a schoolboy percussionist in the London School Symphony Orchestra. He performs at the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican, and tours Italy at the age of 13.

DJ and rave activity

By 1988 he is drawn to hip-hop and DJ culture, and after attending a Rat Pack warehouse party he becomes involved with the collective. He works as a flyer distributor at night and in Harrods by day before DJing for Rat Pack in 1989. He also appears on the London pirate station Sunrise FM, on its legendary Radio Rental show.
