Buika

Buika is a Spanish singer from Palma, Spain, born in 1972. Her work blends jazz and soul with flamenco, and the wider description of her music also includes funk and flamenco fusion. Born Concha Buika in Palma de Mallorca, she comes from a family with roots in Equatorial Guinea and grows up among gypsy people.

She shows musical talent from childhood. A visit to London to study drama becomes a turning point after she is invited to a Pat Metheny concert, which leads her into a musical career.

Career

During the 1990s, Buika takes part in several productions, including Ombra by La Fura dels Baus and the soundtrack to the Spanish film Km.O. In the same period she writes songs including “Ritmo para voçé”, “Up to the Sky” and “Loving You”, which become house successes in Europe.

From November 2000 to March 2001, she performs at The Luxor, Harrah's and Gold Coast casinos in Las Vegas, and she also appears as a guest singer at the Blue Note festival in the city.
