Buddy Whittington Band

Buddy Whittington is a Fort Worth, Texas guitarist and singer whose work is rooted in blues rock, blues, Southern rock and rock. Born in Fort Worth in 1956, he grows up surrounded by radio, television country music, Western swing and a wide range of records from his sister’s collection, which includes British Invasion bands, R&B, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, The Temptations, The Tops, Gary “U.S.” Bonds, Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo.

Early background

Whittington becomes interested in electric guitar at a young age and develops through a series of early musical projects. His formative listening comes from local Fort Worth radio stations and television music programmes, along with his parents’ interest in Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers

In 1993, John Mayall invites Whittington to join The Bluesbreakers. He performs with Mayall on numerous shows and recordings worldwide for 15 years, from 1993 to 2008. His time with the group follows the departure of guitarist Coco Montoya, and the existing Bluesbreakers are later reformed by Mayall.

Solo work and current band

Whittington releases a self-titled solo CD in 2007. It is recorded at Hurricane Sound in Garland, Texas with engineer, producer, drummer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Gage, and features Gage, bassist Wayne Six and guitarist Michael “Mouse” Mayes. This line-up forms the core of his working band. Whittington says the musicians have played in different bands together for years and can cover a wide range of material. He is also writing songs for a second solo release.
