Buck Meek

Buck Meek is a US indie folk musician, singer-songwriter and guitarist best known as a member of Big Thief and PENCIL. He is born in 1987 and comes from the United States. His work combines folk, indie, Americana and country influences.

Early life and musical background

Meek is born in Wimberley, Texas. He learns his first guitar chords from his mother at around the age of six, and as a teenager he plays jazz manouche and outlaw country. He studies at Berklee College of Music in the late 2000s, finishing around the time Adrianne Lenker enrols there.

Big Thief and collaboration with Adrianne Lenker

After moving from Boston to Brooklyn, Meek meets Lenker again after she arrives in the city. The pair release two duo EPs in 2014, A-Sides and B-Sides, before forming Big Thief with bassist Max Oleartchik and drummer James Krivchenia. In Big Thief, Meek works as guitarist and backing vocalist.

Solo releases

Meek releases his debut studio EP, Heart Was Beat, in 2015. His eponymous solo album follows on Austin label Keeled Scales in 2018. Among the collaborators on Heart Was Beat are Lenker, Oleartchik and Mat Davidson, who records as Twain.

He later tours his solo material with Twain and opens a number of shows for Jeff Tweedy in 2019. After the COVID-19 pandemic interrupts touring in 2020, he records his second solo album, Two Saviors, with Davidson, Adam Brisbin on guitar and Austin Vaughn on drums. Engineers Phil Weinrobe and Sarlo also contribute to the record, which is released in 2021.
