Bryce Hackford

Bryce Hackford is a United States-based experimental electronic musician and DJ who has been active since 2007. He makes recordings and works with visual artists, and his output spans ambient, electronic, experimental, and instrumental forms.

Early recordings and approach

Among his early pieces is a 27-minute electric guitar performance called “Modern Propeller Music”, built from guitar, effects, and tape loops. That recording later appears again as a bonus track on Fair, alongside another long-form piece, “Run-On Cirrus”, which is described as a soundscape.

Projects and collaborations

Hackford has released work under the names Behavior and Pearl Necklace, where he explores sampling. These releases bring him critical attention and help define the more collage-based side of his work.

Fair and dance music influences

On Fair, Hackford draws on the sound of Detroit house associated with Moodymann and Theo Parrish, while shaping it into a fragmented form of electronica and dance music. His style is also described as hypnagogic dance and sample-based music, with a focus on altered, uplifting textures.

DJ work

He also DJ’s in Brooklyn warehouse parties, and that environment informs the music on Fair. His work links experimental recording, sampling, and dancefloor-oriented practice.
