Brujeria

Brujeria is an American extreme metal group formed in Los Angeles, United States in 1989. The band works in death metal, deathgrind and grindcore, and performs in Spanish. Its name refers to brujería, the Spanish word for witchcraft.

Style and themes

The group’s lyrics deal with Satanism, anti-Christianity, sex, immigration, narcotics smuggling and politics. Brujeria presents itself with Mexican imagery, and several members are Hispanic and Latino Americans. It also adopts a fictional identity as a Latino drug cartel-style outfit, with members using pseudonyms and hiding their identities. The group’s visual presentation often includes bandanas, balaclavas and serapes, and it is frequently depicted carrying machetes.

Brujeria includes or has included Jello Biafra, Asesino, Güero sin fe, Juan Brujo, Pinche Peach, Fantasma, Hongo, Greñudo, Cristo de Pisto, Pititis, Maldito X, Hongo Jr., Tony Laureano, El Podrido, El Cynico, Daniel Erlandsson, El Criminal, Jessica Pimentel and El Sadístico. Alumni also include Raymond Herrera, Billy Gould, Nick Barker, Jeff Walker and Shane Embury.
