Broken By The Scream is a Japanese group from Japan active since 2017, working across deathcore, j-pop, kawaii metal, lolicore, metal and metalcore. The act combines metalcore, djent and deathcore with idol-style vocals, and is known for a vocal arrangement that separates low growls, high screams and clean singing.

Formation and early releases

The group forms in October 2016 and makes its official debut at Nishikawaguchi Hearts on 15 January 2017. Its first mini-album, Screaming Rhapsody, follows later in 2017 through PCI Music. The band then holds its first solo live show, “The First Scream”, at Shibuya DESEO on 10 September 2017.

Style and live performances

Broken By The Scream’s music joins intense metal writing with idol choreography and idol vocal presentation. Founding member Io performs the low growls, while Yayoi provides high-pitched screams, alongside Tsubaki and Shizuku on clean vocals. The group’s live shows draw attention for this mix of extreme metal and pop-idol performance.

Albums, festivals and touring

In August 2018, the group appears at Tokyo Idol Festival, where moshing leads to tighter security measures. Later that month it releases its debut full-length album, An Alien's Portrait. The band also performs at Rock in Taichung in Taiwan in December 2018 and at the Jeonju Ultimate Music Festival in South Korea in January 2019. In September 2019, it performs in Phoenix, Arizona, in the United States.

Later line-up and releases

Over time, the group goes through several line-up changes. The current members are 野月平イオ and 雲林院カグラ, with the wider history of the group including clean vocalists and other former members who shape its development. Later releases include the 2019 album Noisy Night Fever, the 2022 album RISE into CHAOS and the mini-album ReMake Them Joy, which is released in August 2024.
