BROCKHAMPTON is an American hip-hop group from San Marcos, United States, active from 2015 to 2022. It is an American boyband made up of a large and changing collective of rappers, singers, producers and visual contributors, and it includes Kevin Abstract, Matt Champion, Merlyn Wood, Dom McLennon, JOBA, bearface., Jabari Manwa, Romil Hemnani, Kiko Merley, Ashlan Grey, Robert Ontenient, Jon Nunes, Ameer Vann, Michael Kirby, Henock Sileshi, NOWIFIII and others associated with the group’s final line-up.

Formation and line-up

The group forms partly through online forums and is founded by Kevin Abstract. It also includes members from the defunct Internet music collective AliveSinceForever. Its make-up extends beyond vocalists to producers, a graphic designer, a photographer, a web designer and a manager, reflecting the group’s broad collective structure. In its early years, BROCKHAMPTON also brands itself as a boy band and uses that label to challenge common ideas about the term.

Releases and career

BROCKHAMPTON’s debut mixtape, All-American Trash, is independently released in 2016. After relocating to Los Angeles, the group gains wider attention with the studio albums Saturation, Saturation II and Saturation III, all released in 2017 within a short period. In 2018, the group signs to RCA Records.

That same period also sees the removal of Ameer Vann from the group following accusations of sexual misconduct. Later releases include Iridescence (2018), which debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 and receives a Brit Awards nomination, Ginger (2019), and Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine (2021). Ginger produces the multi-platinum single “Sugar”.

Final releases

BROCKHAMPTON ends in 2022 after releasing its final studio albums, The Family and TM. Over the course of its run, the group releases eight studio albums within five years of its debut project and becomes known for a large discography and for combining hip-hop with a broad collective identity.
