Broadway Calls

Broadway Calls is a pop punk and punk rock group from Rainier, Oregon, active since 2005. The band’s lineup includes Matt Koenig, Adam Willis, Josh Baird and Ty Vaughn. Their sound is also described as melodic and straight-ahead, with elements of both pop and punk, and they are classified more broadly across alternative rock, indie rock and rock.

Origins and early activity

The group forms in the winter of 2005/2006 in Rainier. Josh Baird and Ty Vaughn have a long shared history of making music together before Broadway Calls, through their earlier band Countdown to Life, which is signed to New Age Records alongside acts such as Strife, Countervail and Lifetime. After playing a hometown show, the band goes straight out on tour with label-mate Daggermouth and quickly builds a following in the hardcore community.

Recordings and labels

Broadway Calls signs to Smallman Records in Canada and State of Mind Recordings in the United States for the release of its self-titled debut album. The record is produced by Willie Samuels, part of Green Day’s production team, at Nu-Tone studios in Pittsburgh. The band later signs to Adeline Records and reissues the self-titled album through that label.

Touring and reputation

In the year after forming, Broadway Calls spends much of its time writing and recording, completing another full US tour and appearing with a wide range of punk and hardcore acts, including Crime In Stereo, I Am The Avalanche, The Smoking Popes, The Draft, Avail, This Is Hell, Set It Straight, Ruiner, Dead Hearts, Counting the Days and Final Fight. The band is compared to Latterman, Green Day, Alkaline Trio and Kid Dynamite, and is associated with singalong, high-energy songs that appeal to fans of melodic punk.
