Broads

Broads are a Melbourne duo made up of Kelly Day and Jane Hendry. Their music draws on indie pop, electronic, chamber pop and indie folk, and is shaped by a strong vocal and lyrical approach. The pair move beyond their acoustic beginnings into a broader sound that includes references to 1960s pop, 1970s folk and 1980s new wave.

Style and sound

Their songs are described as haunting, narcotic and deceptively sweet, with lyrics that carry criticism of the culture they come from. The duo’s vocals and songwriting are central to the project, and their sound is presented as avoiding easy comparison with other acts.

Albums

Broads release their debut album Vacancy in 2017. It receives strong critical attention, including praise for its melodies and harmonies, and it features as an album of the week on Triple RRR and PBS FM. It also appears on end-of-year lists from PBS FM and Basement Disc.

The follow-up, Stay Connected, appears in 2019 and is their second album. It is self-produced and continues the expansion of their sound from acoustic roots into a wider range of influences.
