Bria

Bria is a Toronto-based Canadian duo made up of Bria Salmena and Duncan Hay Jennings. The group is active from 2020 and records for Sub Pop Records.

Background

The name Bria is also used by Canadian musician Bria Salmena, who first appears under the Bria moniker as a solo project after working as the lead singer of the post-punk band Frigs. In that solo phase, the Bria name is used for two EPs built around cover versions of country songs, issued in 2021 and 2023. From 2023 onwards, Salmena begins releasing original material under her full name, Bria Salmena.

Style and context

Bria is associated with country, folk and Americana, and its recorded work sits within Salmena’s transition from post-punk into a more country-influenced solo direction.

The name Bria is also used by American-born, Ukraine-based singer-songwriter Bria Blessing, who writes and performs her own songs and leads the Bria Blessing Quartet, a jazz combo based in Lviv, Ukraine.
