Bragolin

Bragolin is a Dutch dark wave and post-punk group from Utrecht. The project is led by Edwin van der Velde and also includes Maria Karssenberg. Its sound draws on a wide range of influences, combining 1980s baritone guitar, synths and drum machines with organs associated with the 1960s and 1970s, and shoegaze-style guitars from the 1990s.

Style and themes

The lyrics are shaped by post-apocalyptic and horror films. Bragolin’s music is rooted in dark wave and post-punk, with links to new wave and coldwave in its broader style.

Releases and collaborators

The debut album, I Saw Nothing Good So I Left, appears in 2018. Its first video is for Into Those Woods, and the track develops into a widely streamed song with more than 10 million all-time streams. The album is produced by van der Velde with former band member Isolde Woudstra and mixed by René Jongeneelen, who also works with him on records for his Dutch Wave project Zwarte Poëzie.

In 2019, van der Velde works with ADAM TRISTAR on the Bragolin vs Adam Tristar album Let Out the Noise Inside.

Live activity

Bragolin has played close to 100 shows at festivals and clubs, including WGT, Amphi, Cold Hearted, Extramuralhas and Kalabalik, and also tours in South America. Since 2020, Edwin Daatselaar joins on synths to form the live duo.

Further work

The group is associated with a follow-up album titled I Don’t Like What It Does To Me, with songs issued individually.
