Boston

Boston is a US rock band from Boston, Massachusetts. It forms in 1975, and songwriter and composer Tom Scholz founds the group. The band’s line-up changes over time, but Scholz and lead singer Brad Delp are the only constant members through 1975 to 1990 and again from 1994 until Delp’s death in 2007. Since 2007, Tommy DeCarlo serves as lead vocalist.

The group’s sound sits within classic rock, hard rock, AOR, arena rock, art rock and heavy metal. Other musicians appear in the band at different points, including Jim Masdea, Barry Goudreau, Sib Hashian, Fran Sheehan, Gary Pihl, Fran Cosmo, Anthony Cosmo, Kimberley Dahme, Jeff Neal and Michael Sweet. The band remains active.

Boston achieves major commercial success in the 1970s and 1980s. Its 1976 self-titled debut album becomes one of the best-selling albums by an American rock band and is certified 17× Platinum. The album is widely associated with some of the band’s best-known songs, including “More Than a Feeling”, “Peace of Mind”, “Foreplay/Long Time”, “Rock and Roll Band” and “Smokin’”.

The band sells more than 75 million records worldwide and over 31 million in the United States. Around 17 million of those sales are attributed to the debut album, while the second studio album, Don’t Look Back (1978), sells about seven million copies in the US. Boston releases six studio albums in total: Boston, Don’t Look Back, Third Stage, Walk On, Corporate America and Life, Love & Hope. Its later studio output is less frequent, with long gaps between albums, but it continues to perform live.

Other notable songs include “Don’t Look Back”, “A Man I’ll Never Be”, “Hitch a Ride”, “Party”, “Amanda” and “Feelin’ Satisfied”. The band is also ranked 63rd among hard rock artists by VH1.
