Bonsai

Bonsai is a German rock band. The name is also used by at least two other musical groups elsewhere, including a Brazilian trio and an indie rock band from San Bernardo, Chile.

Overview

The Brazilian Bonsai is a trio made up of Paulo Braga on piano, Mané Silveira on saxophones and flutes, and Guello on percussion. The group has been active for ten years and plays instrumental music that moves across several Brazilian and jazz forms, including waltz, baião, marches and jongo. It performs in Brazil and combines reinterpretations of music by Victor Assis Brasil and Paulo Bellinati with its own compositions.

Line-up and style

The trio’s instrumentation centres on piano, winds and percussion. Its repertoire draws on jazz alongside Brazilian musical traditions, which gives its music a varied, cross-genre character. The group is described as producing music with a broad, scenic quality.

Other act using the name

A separate act with the same name is an indie rock band from San Bernardo, Chile, with Salvador García, Javier Moncada and Tomás Basaletti as members.
