Boldy James is a rapper from Detroit, with roots in Atlanta. Born James Clay Jones III in 1982, he grows up in Detroit after his family returns there in 1983, and later lives on the city’s west side. He starts writing raps in his early teens after performing in a middle-school talent show, and he leaves Detroit Cooley after the 9th grade.

Early life and name

Boldy James is born in Atlanta, Georgia, to James Clay Jones Jr. and Toni K. Broadus. His family moves back to Detroit when he is a child, following an injury his father sustains while serving as a police officer. He lives on the Eastside with his grandmother before moving with his mother and younger sister to the west side in 1989.

He takes his stage name from a neighbourhood friend, James Osely III, who is known as Boldy. After that friend is killed, Jones adopts the name for his own recording work.

Career

Boldy James first gains wider attention in 2009 through guest appearances on The Cool Kids and Don Cannon’s mixtape Merry Christmas, including the tracks “BBQ Wings” and “Tires”. In 2010 he appears on the remix of Chip tha Ripper’s “Fat Raps” alongside Big Sean, Asher Roth, Dom Kennedy and Chuck Inglish. He also releases “Gettin Flicked” on The Cool Kids’ Tacklebox.

His solo debut mixtape, Trappers Alley Pros and Cons, arrives in 2011 and is later named by Pitchfork as one of that year’s most overlooked projects. He follows it with the mixtape Consignment in 2012 and the EP Grand Quarters in 2013. He also releases Consignment: Favor For A Favor.

His debut album, My 1st Chemistry Set, is released in 2013 and is entirely produced by The Alchemist. He is also known for appearing on J Dilla’s Rebirth Of Detroit.

Style and collaborations
