Bob Malone
Bob Malone is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, studio musician and television composer, born in 1965 and based in West Hollywood. He is from New Jersey and is described as drawing on the musical feel of New Orleans while writing songs that combine humour, heartbreak and a world-weary perspective.
Career
Malone builds his career around piano-led rock and roll, performing as a solo act, with a full band, and in settings ranging from small clubs to larger theatres. He tours extensively in the United States, playing both headlining shows and support slots. His live work includes backing singers and horns as well as more stripped-down performances.
He is also an in-demand session musician in Los Angeles and writes for television. His compositions appear in programmes including Dr. Phil, Entertainment Tonight, The Insider and The Rachel Ray Show. His songs are also used in television series such as Jag, Felicity, Cupid, One Life To Live, The Young & the Restless and All My Children, and in films including Hollywood Palms, Jaded, P.S. I Love You and One Eyed Horse.
Recordings and recognition
Malone’s albums include Malone Alone, a live release, and Born Too Late, a studio album from 2006. Both place in the top twenty on the Living Blues, Roots Music Report and Earshot radio charts. They also receive airplay on more than 300 non-commercial and A3 stations, including Sirius and XM Satellite Radio, and appear on syndicated programmes such as Car Talk, Acoustic Cafe and the Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour.
He performs in the WFUV “Under the Radar” concert series in New York City and appears on the Performing Songwriter magazine Editors Choice compilation CD. His press coverage includes features and reviews in Keyboard, Performing Songwriter, American Songwriter and Blues Review.
Awards and collaborations
Malone receives the Artist of the Year and Singer/Songwriter Album of the Year awards at the Just Plain Folks 2006 Music Awards, the Songwriter of the Year award at the 2007 South Bay Music Awards, and an ASCAP Plus Award. He also works with producer Bob DeMarco on a later recording project involving a range of Los Angeles musicians.
Touring and performance style
His performances are known for energetic piano playing and a strong vocal style. He is described as able to move between sharp humour and emotional songwriting, and to deliver the same material in different formats, from intimate solo appearances to larger ensemble shows with horns and backing vocals.
