BLM is the recording name of Ben Micklewright, a British dance music artist working in house, deep house, IDM and electro. He develops his sound from UK garage and house influences, and his career begins with an early interest in turntables after his father buys him his first set.
Early work and development
At 15, Micklewright starts working at Massive Records, an independent record shop in the UK, where he gets an introduction to house music while already being drawn to UK garage. After four years at the shop, he moves to Nottingham to study sound engineering. During that period he begins shaping the style associated with BLM and secures digital releases on Leftnet and Year of the Machine.
DJ and production career
While in Nottingham, he also DJs at Bomb and Stealth, two well-known venues in the city. His work as a producer and DJ is tied to the dance music scene from the start, with his sound developing from his garage roots into a wider club-oriented style.
Label work
After moving to London, Micklewright co-runs the label Fear of Flying with his long-term friend Jay Massive. The label gains support from Steve Bug, Loco Dice, Craig Richards and Terry Francis, and plans releases from Schatrax, Leif, Pawas and BLM itself are part of its catalogue direction.
