Blaze Bayley

Blaze Bayley is an English heavy metal singer from Birmingham, United Kingdom. Born Bayley Alexander Cooke in 1963, he begins his professional career in 1984 as the lead vocalist of Wolfsbane.

Wolfsbane

Bayley fronts Wolfsbane from 1984 to 1994, and later returns for reunion performances in 2007 and 2009 before the band resumes regular activity in 2010. With Wolfsbane, he records early demos and then the debut album Live Fast, Die Fast in 1989. The band supports Iron Maiden on the No Prayer on the Road tour in the United Kingdom in 1990, releases the EP All Hell's Breaking Loose Down at Little Kathy Wilson's Place in 1990 and the studio album Down Fall the Good Guys in 1991, and reaches number 68 on the UK Singles Chart with the single “Ezy”. After being dropped by their record label, Wolfsbane are voted the United Kingdom’s best unsigned act in 1993. The group also releases the live album Massive Noise Injection in 1993 and the studio album Wolfsbane in 1994. After Bayley’s departure the band disbands, then later releases Wolfsbane Save the World in 2011 and continues to perform live.

Iron Maiden

In 1994 Bayley replaces Bruce Dickinson as lead singer of Iron Maiden after a series of auditions. He records two studio albums with the band, The X Factor in 1995 and Virtual XI in 1998, and tours extensively behind both. He leaves the band in 1999, after which Dickinson returns.

Solo work and Blaze

After leaving Iron Maiden, Bayley forms the band BLAZE in 1999 and signs with the German label SPV. With this group he releases Silicon Messiah in 2000, Tenth Dimension in 2002, Blood & Belief in 2004 and the live album As Live as It Gets in 2003. Following lineup changes and financial difficulties, he begins performing under the name Blaze Bayley. He later records for Blaze Bayley Recordings.

Later releases and collaborations

In 2007 Bayley forms a new band and releases the live DVD Alive in Poland. That group issues The Man Who Would Not Die in 2008 and Promise and Terror in 2010. He follows with The King of Metal in 2012 and, with guitarist Thomas Zwijsen, the acoustic EP Russian Holiday in 2013, which presents acoustic versions of songs associated with his career. In 2013 he releases the compilation Soundtracks of My Life, marking 30 years of his singing career. He then works with musicians from Absolva as his touring and recording group, releasing the concept album trilogy Infinite Entanglement in 2016, Endure and Survive in 2017, and The Redemption of William Black in 2018. During the same period he also issues the acoustic album December Wind in 2018. Live releases include Live in Prague, Live in France in 2019 and Live in Czech in 2020. In 2021 he releases War Within Me, recorded with members of Absolva, and in 2024 he announces Circle of Stone, preceded by the singles “Rage”, “Circle of Stone” and “Mind Reader”.

Influences and other work

Bayley cites seeing Ronnie James Dio on the Holy Diver tour at the Birmingham Odeon as an important influence on his decision to become a singer. At the time he works as a hotel porter and becomes interested in performing after watching rehearsals by a local band. He also appears in collaborative tours and special projects with other heavy metal vocalists, including former Iron Maiden singer Paul Di'Anno, Geoff Tate and Tim “Ripper” Owens. In 2016 he performs “Baba O'Riley” with Disturbed at Download Festival in England.

Personal life

Bayley marries Debbie Hartland in 2007; she dies in 2008 following a stroke. In December 2022 he becomes engaged to Kate Ross at Stonehenge. In March 2023 he suffers a heart attack.
