Black Umfolosi

Black Umfolosi are a performing arts group from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. They begin in 1982, when the original members form the group while still at school. Over time they develop into an internationally active ensemble with 18 members, working in music, dance and wider community arts activity.

Music and performance

The group are known for harmonic a cappella singing and traditional African dance. Their recorded work includes singing styles such as imbube, mbaqanga and township songs. Their live performances combine traditional Southern African dance forms with contemporary movements they create themselves.

Touring and reach

Black Umfolosi tour extensively from Zimbabwe and perform in the UK, Australia, Asia, Europe, Canada and the USA. They are often compared with Ladysmith Black Mambazo of South Africa.

Community work and training

Beyond performance, the group run training and outreach work, especially with young people. They help identify and develop emerging groups and mentor them towards success. Their workshops and residencies cover dance, voice, theatre, costume design, poetry and mime, and they also address social issues. Their outreach work includes activity with universities, hospitals, prisons, community centres and other arts institutions, both in Zimbabwe and internationally.
