Black State Highway

Black State Highway are a Brighton-based five-piece hard rock and blues-influenced group, active since 2010. They form at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music and are a female-fronted act.

The band builds its sound around heavy, riff-based rock with bluesy guitar work, a down-to-earth presentation, and strong 1970s rock influence. Their approach combines crunching riffs, skilled solos and melodic hooks, with a rhythm section described as providing power and aggression. Lead singer Liva Steinberga provides power vocals at the centre of the group’s sound.

Black State Highway present themselves as outside the boundaries of classic rock tradition while still drawing on that older rock lineage. They also describe their style in irreverent terms, using the phrase “The Pong” for their intended effect.
