Black Crucifixion

Black Crucifixion is a black metal group from Rovaniemi, Finland, active since 1991. It forms around Forn on vocals and Blacksoul on guitar, with Beherit members Sodomatic Slaughter on drums and Arjo Wennström on bass joining the line-up at the start. The band is associated with Finnish black metal and also appears under the tags dark metal and doom metal.

Early history

In its first weeks, the band uses the name Horned Lord before settling on Black Crucifixion. It makes its live debut on 23 August 1991 at the Day of Darkness metal festival in Oulu, alongside Sentenced, Impaled Nazarene, Demigod, Amorphis, Belial and Beherit.

Holocausto Vengeance of Beherit contributes as co-producer on the December 1991 recording sessions for the debut demo The Fallen One of Flames. The demo is issued as a limited tape run of 250 copies by Fallen Pages Productions, the publisher of the zine Fallen Pages.

Releases

After The Fallen One of Flames, Black Crucifixion begins working on its debut release for Austrian label Lethal Records. New member E. Henrik plays bass and contributes some of the songwriting, as the band’s sound develops. The EP Promethean Gift appears in 1993.

There is then a long gap before the next release, Faustian Dream in 2006. A live album follows in 2009, then the full-length albums Hope of Retaliation in 2011 and Coronation of King Darkness in 2013.

Visual identity

The band’s original logo is designed by Taneli Jarva, who also creates logos for Sentenced, Impaled Nazarene, Black League and Beherit, and performs in the first three of those bands.
