Black Cobra

Black Cobra is a doom metal and sludge metal group from San Francisco, United States. It forms in 2001 and is active from 2002 onwards. The group consists of Jason Landrian and Rafael Martinez, with Martinez also previously serving as bassist in Acid King. Its genres include doom metal, metal, sludge metal and stoner metal, and it is associated with Season of Mist.

Formation and background

Jason Landrian, based in New York, and Rafael Martinez, based in Los Angeles, begin working together in 2001 on a new project after both have experience in other heavy bands, including Cavity and Acid King. The project becomes Black Cobra. Martinez’s earlier work in Acid King is a notable part of the group’s background.

Releases

The band’s self-titled EP appears in 2004. It is followed by the album Bestial in 2006 and the mini-album Feather and Stone in 2007. By this period, Black Cobra has developed a sound described through its relation to heavy, distorted metal bands such as Mastodon and High on Fire.
