Black Box Red
Black Box Red is a duo from Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. It consists of a male drummer and a female guitarist, and the pair describe themselves through a mix of grunge, blues and electronic elements. Their line-up uses guitar, drums and synthesizer, and their performances are built around a loud, raw sound with a strong live energy.
Style and influences
The group combines grunge with blues and electro, and their music is associated with a danceable approach to heavy rock. Their influences include Crystal Castles, Blood Red Shoes and The Dead Weather.
Recordings and releases
In August 2011, the band records the EP Battle the Sparrows in the French countryside. The six-song release comes out in 2011 through Dying Giraffe Recordings.
Live activity and achievements
Black Box Red appears at Lowlands Festival in 2010, Eurosonic in 2011 and Popronde in 2011. The duo also takes part in the Freesonica band coaching project in 2011 and reaches the Grote Prijs van Nederland in 2010. In addition, it records a track with Jagz Kooner for a reworking of The Clash’s London Calling at the Un-Convention Factory in London.
Approach
The duo is known for a strong DIY attitude and for treating the two members as complementary opposites, both in appearance and in stage presence. Their live show places emphasis on the chemistry between the drummer and guitarist and on energy across the stage.
