Black Atlass is the stage name of Alex Fleming, a Canadian singer, songwriter and experimental producer from Montréal. Born in 1994, he begins releasing music in 2012, when he puts out the visuals for his original track “Hills” and starts to establish a style that sits outside a single genre.

Sound and style

His music combines synth-based production, spacious drums, dreamy reverberated vocals and inventive melodies. It is described as drawing on the romantic character of Montréal while setting that against stark electronic textures. His approach also includes live performance with an MPD/computer setup, with him singing while recreating beats in real time rather than relying on pre-sequenced backing.

Early release

His first EP, The Black Atlass EP, appears on Green United Music. It contains six tracks and runs for 18 minutes, moving through a range of production styles. The release includes the sample-heavy “Ways” and the more atmospheric “Paris Interlude”.

Performance and collaborators
