Bird Courage

Bird Courage is an experimental folk trio from the United States, based in Brooklyn, New York. The group forms around songwriters Erik Meier, Samuel Saffery and Sean McMahon, who meet in a range of unconventional performance spaces including cellars and subway tunnels. Their music combines minimalist acoustic and indie folk elements with three-part vocal harmonies, finger-picked guitar, xylophone and drum bursts.

Career and releases

The band remains independent and self-funds its recordings. It releases its debut EP, A Promising Flee, with Studio G Brooklyn in 2012. Its first full-length album, Māia Manu, is funded through Kickstarter, recorded and mixed at Studio G Brooklyn, and released in 2013.

Live activity

Bird Courage builds an audience across New York City and nearby states, and later performs in cities across the Northeast and the South. The group plays venues including Rockwood Music Hall, Cameo Gallery, Gramercy Theatre, The Rock Shop and Pete’s Candy Store. It also appears at events and residencies such as Boston Arts Festival, The Last Weekend Festival, New York’s Roof Top Film Festival, Sleep No More at The McKittrick Hotel, and a month-long residency at Ace Hotel in New York City.

Collaborations and appearances

In 2012, Bird Courage supports Kyp Malone and Monogold at The Autumn Bowl in Brooklyn. In 2013, Brooklyn Brewery selects the group to perform and promote the brewery in North Carolina.
