Bini

Bini is an Austrian singer. The name is also associated in the input with BINI, a Filipino girl group formed by ABS-CBN Star Hunt Academy and debuting in 2021 under ABS-CBN Star Magic. That group is described as an eight-member act made up of Aiah Arceta, Colet Vergara, Maloi Ricalde, Gwen Apuli, Stacey Sevilleja, Mikha Lim, Jhoanna Robles, and Sheena Catacutan.

Background and name

The group name comes from the Filipino word binibini, meaning “young lady”, and reflects a concept of a modern Filipina described as sweet, fierce, independent, and informed. Before debuting, the group is known as Star Hunt Academy Girls, or SHA Girls.

Releases and activities

Before its official debut, the group releases a pop cover of Ryan Cayabyab’s “Da Coconut Nut” as a pre-debut single. It then debuts with “Born to Win” and follows that with “Kapit Lang”. Its first studio album, Born to Win, includes the key track “Golden Arrow” as well as five new tracks and multilingual versions of “Born to Win” in Bahasa Indonesia, Japanese, Thai and Spanish.

The second studio album, Feel Good, features “Strings” as a key track and also includes “Lagi” and “I Feel Good”, both of which appear before the album release. In 2023, the group releases “Karera” and “Pantropiko”, with “Pantropiko” becoming widely known through the “Pantropiko Dance Challenge” and being treated as a summer anthem in the Philippines. Its first EP, Talaarawan, follows with “Salamin, Salamin” as the key track.

Performances and later releases

The group becomes the first Filipino pop act to perform at KCON, appearing at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and performing “Cherry on Top” during the pre-show. It also holds its first solo concert, Biniverse, at New Frontier Theater in Quezon City, followed by additional shows in response to demand. The group later tours the Philippines and Canada and then presents The Grand Biniverse at Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Subsequent releases include “Blink Twice”, the EP Biniverse, and “Shagidi”, which is inspired by a traditional Filipino children’s game. The group’s third studio album, Flames, contains seven tracks, including “First Luv”, “Shagidi” and “Paru-Paro”.

Profile

The group is widely referred to as the “Nation’s Girl Group” because of its impact on public attention and on Philippine pop music.
