Bill Orcutt

Bill Orcutt is a guitarist from San Francisco whose work spans experimental music, jazz, free improvisation, noise, psychedelic music, freak folk and improvisation. He begins as the guitarist and founder of the noise rock duo Harry Pussy, which later becomes a trio. His playing is known for taking blues guitar as a starting point and reshaping it into fragmented, stuttering phrases, often on solo acoustic guitar, with echoes of Southern folk scales and melodies that are stretched, interrupted and left unresolved.

Projects and collaborations

Orcutt works with Harry Pussy, Watt, the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet, Orcutt Shelley Miller and Trash Monkeys. These projects place him across different settings for guitar-led experimental music, from duo and trio formats to quartet and collaborative work.

Style and labels

His music is associated with jagged solo playing, large streams of notes and a close relationship to blues and folk-derived material, reworked through noise and improvisation. He is associated with Palilalia Records and Editions Mego.
