Beth Rowley

Beth Rowley is an English singer-songwriter from Lima, Peru, who moves to Bristol, England, as a child. Born in 1981, she works across pop, chart music, soul, jazz and blues, and is associated with female vocalists and singer-songwriters.

Early work and EPs

In 2000, Rowley begins working with jazz saxophonist Ben Castle, who has connections with Jamie Cullum and is the son of British entertainer Roy Castle. She starts writing her own material with Castle’s support and releases three EPs: Beth Rowley in 2004, Sweet Hours in 2006 and Violets in 2007. From the Violets EP, she releases “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”, which is named iTunes Single of the Week for December 2007.

Album career

Rowley’s debut album, Little Dreamer, is released in the UK in 2008 and enters the UK album chart at number 6. The lead single, “Oh My Life”, is featured as BBC Radio 2 Record of the Week. A second single from the album, “So Sublime”, is also released.

Collaborations and soundtrack work

Rowley collaborates with several other acts. She provides backing vocals for Crowded House on “Transit Lounge” from Time on Earth, and she records a duet with Duke Special on Little Dreamer. She also records “Too much too late” with Bristol-based singer-songwriter Steven Reid Williams for the album Corners, and she sings on Nostalgia77’s “Quiet Dawn” from Everything Under the Sun. In film work, she records the exclusive track “Careless Talk” for The Edge of Love, a film based on the life of Dylan Thomas.

Other appearances and recognition

Rowley appears with Burt Bacharach on the BBC Electric Proms series and sings “24 Hours from Tulsa”. She also receives a Brit Award nomination in the Best British Female Solo Artist category in 2009.
