Ben Smith Band

Ben Smith Band is a Melbourne-based singer-songwriter project led by Ben Smith. Smith spends part of his early twenties living and travelling in London before returning to Melbourne, and those experiences feed into songs about life, love, good times and bad. The music combines acoustic guitar-based pop rock with an earthy, soulful blues-roots feel.

Releases

The project signs to independent Melbourne label Dust Devil Records in 2006. Its recorded output includes the Whiskey Sunset EP and the debut album Sometimes Always Never, both released on Dust Devil Music. These recordings present Smith as a songwriter focused on story and emotion.

Live work and lineup

Ben Smith performs both as a solo act and with a band. The trio line-up includes bass guitarist Nick Ohlson, whose previous work in roots acts adds a more rhythmic element, and drummer Tim O’Connor, who is a long-term member of the live group. The act builds a following in Melbourne through headline shows and support slots for Dallas Frasca & Her Gentleman and Zoophyte, and also plays interstate dates.
