Ben Rau
Ben Rau is a German DJ and producer associated with house, deep house and tech house. He grows out of club culture, first developing his interest in house and techno in his late teens through raving and long nights on dancefloors in Germany and the UK. That background shapes his work as both a selector and studio producer, with an approach aimed at people who spend their nights dancing.
Early development
Rau is from Berlin and moves to the UK to study before becoming immersed in the east London party scene. He shifts from the dancefloor to DJing and then into production, building experience both in clubs and in the studio. He later returns to Berlin to set up a studio and continue his career there.
Labels and releases
In 2016, Rau takes control of his own output through his self-release imprint Inkal and his sister label Meta. Both labels build a reputation through releases that gain support in record shops and receive multiple represses. He also develops a profile as a producer to watch and as a DJ comfortable in clubs and on larger stages.
Style and position
Rau’s work is closely tied to the culture of dancing and communal club experiences, reflecting his long-term connection to the floor as well as the booth. His reputation develops around his activity in house and techno and his focus on music rooted in the dancefloor.
