Behind the Shadow Drops

Behind the Shadow Drops is the solo project of Takaakira “Taka” Goto, the founding guitarist and composer of Japanese experimental and post-rock group MONO. The project begins in Japan in 2016 and centres on Goto’s interest in ambient music, trip-hop, industrial minimalism and modern classical composition.

Debut album

The first album, H a r m o n i c, appears in 2017. It is recorded at Goto’s home studio and mixed by John McEntire, known for his work with Tortoise, The Sea and Cake and Yo La Tengo. The album also features percussion and drum programming from McEntire and contributions from Los Angeles cellist Helen Money. Its sound combines synths, drum machines, noise loops and strings, moving from a resemblance to MONO’s more melancholy material into a darker, more abstract style.

Activity

After the debut album, Goto tours Europe and Asia under the Behind the Shadow Drops name.
