Bash & Pop

Bash & Pop is an American power pop and alternative rock group from Minneapolis, United States. Tommy Stinson forms the band in 1992 after the breakup of the Replacements, and he remains the central figure in its line-up.

History

Stinson moves from bass to guitar and lead vocals for Bash & Pop after spending time as the bassist in the Replacements. The original line-up includes latter-day Replacements drummer Steve Foley, Steve Foley’s brother Kevin on bass, and guitarist Steve Brantseg. The band’s name comes from a contest on New York radio station WDRE.

Bash & Pop releases one album, Friday Night Is Killing Me, in 1993. The record receives mixed reviews, with some criticism that Stinson struggles to step out of the shadow of Replacements bandmate Paul Westerberg. Many critics point to The Faces as a clear influence on the group’s sound.

The song “Making Me Sick” appears in the 1994 film Clerks and on its soundtrack. The band disbands in 1994, then Stinson revives the name in 2016 with a new line-up.

Later line-up

In the reformed version, the members are Kevin Foley, Steve Foley, Steve Selvidge, and Tommy Stinson. Earlier reports also describe the project as having a changing bass position, including Janis Tanaka on tour, and suggest much of the first album may be recorded largely by Stinson with help from session musicians.
