Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow is an American singer, songwriter, producer and arranger from Brooklyn, New York, born in 1943. He is associated with easy listening, jazz, pop and soft rock, and he has also worked with Featherbed.

Career

Born Barry Alan Pincus, Manilow’s career spans more than six decades. His recordings include “Could It Be Magic,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” “Ready to Take a Chance Again,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” “Weekend in New England,” and “Copacabana (At the Copa).”

He releases many of his recordings through labels including Arista, STILETTO Ltd., BMPI Music, Kamakazi Music Corporation, Kamikazee Music, Manilow Music, Obbligato Music, STILETTO Entertainment and Townsway Music. In addition to recording as a solo artist, he produces and arranges albums for himself and other artists, and he writes and performs songs for musicals, films and corporate commercials. His commercial work includes songs for McDonald’s, Pepsi Cola and Band-Aid.

Chart success and recognition

Manilow has 51 singles that reach the Top 40 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, including 13 number ones, 28 top ten entries and 36 that reach the top twenty. He has 13 platinum albums and six multi-platinum albums, and he has sold over 85 million records worldwide as a solo artist.

Although his work receives mixed critical reviews, he is recognised by other recording artists; in the 1970s Frank Sinatra says, “He’s next.” He receives fifteen Grammy Award nominations between 1973 and 2015 as a producer, arranger and performer, and he wins once. He also produces Grammy-nominated albums for Bette Midler, Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughan.
