Bajofondo

Bajofondo is a South American group from Buenos Aires and Uruguay that begins in 2001 and performs an electronic form of tango often described as electrotango or tango fusion. It is made up of eight musicians from Argentina and Uruguay and is also known by its earlier name, Bajofondo Tango Club. The group describes itself as a collective of composers, singers and artists.

Style and development

The group’s music combines acoustic tango with electronic music and is also linked to dnb, house, chill out and trip-hop. Its sound is often compared with that of Gotan Project. The project is part of the wider development of electrotango, and its work helps move tango back into the mainstream.

Releases and related work

Bajofondo’s first record, Bajofondo Tango Club, appears in 2004 and brings the group wider success. Luciano Supervielle, one of the members, also has a solo project as a pianist, DJ and composer, which receives a warm critical response in late 2005. The group’s third album, Mar Dulce, blends Latin alternative with contemporary music forms from the Río de la Plata area on the border between Argentina and Uruguay.

The group includes Gustavo Santaolalla, Juan Campodónico, Luciano Supervielle, Martín Ferrés, Verónica Loza, Javier Casalla, Gabriel Casacuberta and Adrián Sosa. Their roles include composition, guitar, percussion, production, sequences, DJ work, piano, scratching, bandoneón, vocals, video jockey duties, violin, bass and drums. The group is associated with the label Vibra.
