BadBadNotGood

BadBadNotGood is a Canadian instrumental band from Toronto, formed in 2010. The group is known for working across hip hop, instrumental hip hop and jazz, and is often associated with experimental and avant-garde approaches.

Formation and membership

The original trio forms at Humber College in Toronto, where pianist Matt Tavares, bassist Chester Hansen and drummer Alex Sowinski meet through shared musical interests, including OFWGKTA, Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame. The group later expands to include saxophonist Leland Whitty, who becomes an official member in 2016. Matt Tavares is no longer a member by 2019. The listed members are Chester Hansen, Alexander Sowinski, Matthew Tavares and Leland Whitty.

Releases and collaborations

BadBadNotGood releases its first two albums in 2011 and 2012, both made available for free through the band’s Bandcamp. Its third album, III, appears in 2014. The group then releases Sour Soul, a collaboration with Ghostface Killah, followed by IV in 2016. IV includes collaborations with artists such as Kaytranada and Mick Jenkins.
