Bad Rabbits
Bad Rabbits are a Boston group active since 2007. They are associated with Mind Over Matter Records and feature Fredua Boakye and Sheel Davé among their members.
Sound and style
The group plays a mix of soul, funk, pop, indie and New Jack Swing, with a sound they describe as “New Crack Swing”. Their music combines late 1980s and early 1990s dance influences with a harder edge, drawing on the swagger of Prince, the intensity of Bad Brains, and the raw soul associated with Sly and the Family Stone.
Repertoire and performance
“Stick Up Kids” is presented as a key example of their style, with vocals in the style of Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative” era, synth work that recalls Morris Day and the Time, and a forceful, high-energy character. The group is also known for live performance, with a reputation for explosive stage presence and extensive touring.
Background and associations
Bad Rabbits are described as having spent years together in The Eclectic Collective before forming the group. They also serve as Slick Rick’s backing band and receive a shout-out from Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes at Warped Tour. Their early profile is further linked to support from a Karmaloop.com clothing sponsor.
