B-Complex

B-Complex is the recording name of Matia Lenická, formerly known as Matúš Lenický. She is a drum and bass and liquid funk producer from Šaľa, Slovakia, who is also associated with chillstep. Her early musical work begins in 1996, when she is twelve years old, and she moves through hardcore, trance, psytrance, downtempo and hip-hop before focusing on drum and bass in 2001 after hearing Stakka and Skynet’s album Clockwork.

Career

B-Complex is discovered in November 2008 by Tony Colman of Hospital Records. The label features her track Beautiful Lies on the London Electricity podcast and later on the BBC Radio 1 Introducing show. Beautiful Lies is then released as an A-side on Hospital’s Sick Music compilation in June 2009, where it reaches the UK iTunes download chart top 30 and the top five of Beatport’s drum and bass chart. The track becomes one of her best-known releases and is regarded as a classic in drum and bass circles.

Another track, Three Dots, receives play from Tony Colman and High Contrast on Radio 1. She also develops a full DJ schedule and plays her first UK show in September 2009 at Hospitality @ Matter in London.

Style and identity

Her music develops from a wide range of influences, and she is described as following her own approach rather than copying other artists. She also comes out as transgender and speaks in support of tolerance, understanding and minority rights through both her actions and her music. Past lessons for the future, a free track featuring words by Czech actor and philosopher Jan Werich, is given as an example of this outlook.
