Azraq Sahara

Azraq Sàhara forms in Athens, Greece, in 2013 as the personal project of singer and songwriter Sara D. Satàn. Its early material begins with home recordings and live performances that mix lo-fi beach pop and surf melodies. After a year of writing and experimenting with other artists in the Athenian psych scene, the project develops into a band in 2015.

Sound and style

The group describes its music as “Desert Goth”, combining surf guitars and jungle drums with Mediterranean influences. Its sound draws on folk, Eastern melodies, sea sounds and desert winds, and the music is linked to both Mediterranean origins and a route from the Sahara Desert to the Californian coast. The first single, “Bones”, is described as goth-tinged beach pop with a hazy, dark atmosphere.

Releases

The debut album, Radamenes, is an 11-track release issued in 2015 on Athens-based TBMR Records. It continues the earlier lo-fi beach-pop and surf-based approach while pushing further into the band’s Mediterranean elements.

Location and lineup

Azraq Sàhara is now based in Manchester, UK, and operates with a newly settled line-up. The project continues to perform in Britain under its self-styled Desert Goth identity.
