Axel Boy is the stage name of Alex Joyce, a dubstep producer and DJ from Bristol. He first appears on the scene in 2014 with the Most Additive release Do You Need It/Out Of Love.
Style and career
Axel Boy starts out in dubstep and later moves into a wider bass sound that draws on bassline, bass house and drum and bass. He becomes known in the US dubstep scene and also makes an impact in British bassline. His work is associated with dubstep, electronic music and 4x4, dubstep-inspired bass styles.
Background
He grows up listening to electronic music and begins producing while studying performing arts at Bath College. He says a key early influence is hearing the Shy FX track Original Nutta through his father’s hi-fi system and subwoofer, which gives him an interest in bass and encourages him to produce music himself. He is also listening to dubstep and grime from the early to mid-2000s.
Collaborations and releases
Axel Boy works with Borgore and releases music on several major labels within dubstep. He also has his own label, Axel Boy.
