Austin Millz
Austin Millz is a Harlem-based music producer whose work is rooted in instrumental hip-hop and electronic production. He teaches himself Fruity Loops, collects vinyl from a young age, and learns piano and saxophone in his teenage years. Before making beats, he absorbs jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop, and he draws on that background in his production style, which uses soul samples, hard-hitting drums, saxophone riffs and piano.
Early development
Growing up in Harlem, New York, he develops his ear in a city with a strong musical culture. His first break comes in 2006, when a Loud Records/SRC A&R and producer Sean C. hears his production and supports his development. That early encouragement helps him build visibility and establish the Austin Millz name.
He later studies Journalism at Penn State University, choosing to continue his education while refining his production and widening his network. During his time at university, he is exposed to new genres, tastes and cultures. After graduating in 2010, he returns to Harlem to focus on music full time.
Releases and production work
In 2012, he releases his debut solo project, Earned, a collection of 17 instrumental tracks produced over the course of a year. The release draws attention from digital outlets and marks a significant step in his career.
He also places productions with Jim Jones, Maybach Music Group, G.O.O.D. Music, Wale, Troy Ave and Hit-Boy. His music is described in terms of versatility, force and innovation, and his work builds from the blend of hip-hop, electronic sound and live instrumental influence that shapes his background.
