Atlum Schema

Atlum Schema is the ambient indie solo project of Andy Mort, based in Royal Leamington Spa. It begins in 2005 as a series of home recordings and develops from a creative offshoot into a larger, ongoing project. Mort also uses the name to explore ideas through a blog and podcast, alongside a do-it-yourself approach to releasing and presenting the music.

Releases and performances

The second full-length release appears in 2009 as a self-titled 11-track album. It takes three years to complete, during which Mort works around changing priorities, house moves and limited funds, moving between bedrooms, kitchens, garages and hallways while recording and performing. He then brings together an eight-piece band to launch the album with a live performance at Harbour Lights Cinema in Southampton.

One World Less

In 2010, Mort develops a new project called One World Less. It includes a 16-track album, a 55,000-word novella and more than twenty pieces of artwork. Rather than issuing it as a single release, he plans to divide it into four EPs across the four seasons of 2011, with each EP paired with a corresponding seasonal section of the novella. The project reflects his interest in art, consumer culture and selfish capitalism.

Patronage and live activity

Mort also uses a Pledge Music campaign to support the project, offering rewards that include box sets, original artwork, T-shirts and acoustic performances in supporters’ homes. Atlum Schema continues to present both full-band shows and solo performances built around looping and sampling.
