Astrid S

Astrid Smeplass is a Norwegian singer-songwriter and model from Rennebu, Norway, who performs professionally as Astrid S. Born in 1996, she grows up in Berkåk and begins making music at an early age, starting piano at six and later learning several instruments as well as singing and songwriting.

Career

She first comes to wider attention in 2013 when she takes part in the Norwegian version of Pop Idol, Idol - Jakten på en superstjerne, and finishes fifth. During the competition she releases the single “Shattered” under her birth name, written with Lars K. Hushoft and Melanie Fontana. The track streams more than 5 million times and is certified gold within a week, becoming the most successful single among that series’ final five contestants. After her Pop Idol appearance, she signs to Playroom Artist.

She later releases “2AM” through Universal Music as her first single under the Astrid S name, and also issues a cover version of “FourFiveSeconds”, which receives radio play in Norway. In 2015 she features on “Air” by Canadian artist Shawn Mendes, from the album Handwritten, which reaches number one on the Billboard 200. She also appears on Avicii’s “Waiting For Love” remix EP and releases “Hyde”, produced by Lido and co-produced by Cal Maui & Blisse. The track is premiered by Fader.

Awards and recognition

Astrid S wins an MTV EMA for Best Norwegian Act, takes two awards at P3 Gull, and receives a Norwegian Grammy nomination for Best Song for “2AM”. She is also signed to Sony/ATV Music Publishing as one of its youngest songwriters.
