As I Lay Dying

As I Lay Dying is an American metalcore band from San Diego, California, formed in 2000 by vocalist Tim Lambesis. The first complete lineup is established in 2001 and includes drummer Jordan Mancino. The band draws on metalcore, melodic death metal, hardcore, metal, and Christian metal.

Releases

The group releases eight studio albums, along with one split album and two compilation albums. Its studio albums are Beneath the Encasing of Ashes (2001), Frail Words Collapse (2003), Shadows Are Security (2005), An Ocean Between Us (2007), The Powerless Rise (2010), Awakened (2012), Shaped by Fire (2019), and Through Storms Ahead (2024).

An Ocean Between Us reaches number 8 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on the Top Rock chart. The song “Nothing Left” receives a Grammy nomination in 2008 for Best Metal Performance.

Recognition and performances

The band performs at festivals and events including Wacken Open Air, With Full Force, Soundwave Festival, Warped Tour, Bloodstock Open Air, and Taste of Chaos. It receives MTV2’s “Ultimate Metal God” award in 2007 during the first annual “All That Rocks” special. It is also named Artist of the Year at the San Diego Music Awards in 2005, 2007, and 2008.

Activity and lineup changes

The Powerless Rise follows a three-year writing process, and Awakened is released in 2012. The band goes on indefinite hiatus in 2014 after Lambesis is convicted and sentenced to six years in prison for soliciting the murder of his estranged wife. During the hiatus, the remaining members form Wovenwar with vocalist Shane Blay.

In 2018, Lambesis reunites with guitarists Nick Hipa and Phil Sgrosso, drummer Jordan Mancino, and bassist Josh Gilbert. The single “My Own Grave” is released in June 2018 and is the band’s first new material in six years. Shaped by Fire follows in 2019. After that release, Hipa leaves in 2020, Gilbert and Mancino leave in 2022 and are replaced by Ken Susi, Ryan Neff, and Nick Pierce, and all three replacements leave in 2024. Sgrosso then departs, leaving Lambesis as the sole member.
