Arthur Barr is a Leeds-based DJ, producer and label operator working in house and techno. He builds a late-night style that combines the funk of house with the drive and power of techno, and he is known for detailed, carefully structured DJ sets.
Background and style
Barr develops his sound from a strong interest in electronic music and from experience on the club circuit. He starts out playing beats at Ibiza strip joints at the age of nineteen, and later builds a reputation for understanding how dancefloors work. His sets are described as dark, controlled and tightly programmed, with an emphasis on flow and track selection.
DJ work and recognition
He plays in Miami at the Winter Music Conference, as well as in the Czech Republic, Greece and Ibiza, and he also appears at clubs across the UK. In London he holds a residency at Public Life. His mix work gains attention from figures including Glimpse, Yousef, Eddie Halliwell, Nic Fanciulli and Riva Starr, among others.
DJ Mag describes his sets as “mouth watering toe tapping techno”. His Electrotheraphy Mix wins IDJ’s Raw Talent competition in 2007, he finishes as runner-up in 2009, and he wins the competition again in April of the following year.
Fullbarr imprint
Barr runs the Fullbarr imprint, where he also works in A&R. The label releases music physically and digitally and focuses on producers associated with emerging UK talent. Through the label he helps bring artists such as Robert Cashin and Retrac to wider attention.
Fullbarr receives support from DJs and producers including Sven Väth, Slam, Soulclap, Francois K, Paco Osuna, Jennifer Cardini, Glimpse, H.O.S.H, Daniel Sanchez, Thomas Schumacher, Andrew Grant, Nic Fanciulli, Mark Henning, James Teej, DJ Hell, Terry Francis, Laurent Garnier, Sei A, Stacey Pullen, 2000 and One, Michel De Hey and others. Mark Broom, Danton Eeprom and Brendon Moeller are also linked to projects on the label.
Critical response
His work is praised for control, restraint, programming and track choice. Comments attached to his name describe his music as representative of deep house and techno, and note its twisted, trippy character with a strong sense of surprise.
