Artemis

Artemis is a United States-based electro-pop group active since 1999 and associated with RTFM Records. The name is shared by several acts, but this entry concerns the California-based group. The group works in electronic music and is also tagged with drum and bass, trip-hop, downtempo and atmospheric drum and bass.

Background and early releases

Artemis begins as a San Francisco-based downtempo and trip-hop project led by a vocalist who first works on guitar. The project’s earliest release is a five-song EP called Treasure, whose title track reaches the top 10 on MP3.com and gains nearly 200,000 plays. After meeting David Earl and Keith Crusher in 2000, the project moves toward a more electronic sound.

Albums and EPs

In 2001, Artemis releases Undone, which receives praise from media including Keyboard Magazine and Broadjam.com. The group follows in 2005 with Gravity, a release that develops the sound further and leads to a full-page review in Electronic Musician as well as coverage in Remix magazine about the band’s tour rig. In 2007, Artemis issues Orbits, a remix collection drawing on material from Undone and Gravity and featuring contributions from remixers the group had met. In early 2010, the group releases the Auralei EP, which contains four new songs and four remixes.

Later work and collaborators

The project later works on Body Of Glass, alongside a single of “Truth” from that release. That single is made with Divasonic and remixed by Tyler Stone, miKroNaught, David Earl, Mijo, Celeste Lear and others.
