Aroop Roy
Aroop Roy is a producer, musician, DJ and label head whose work connects electronic music with a broad range of organic and dancefloor-led styles. His productions draw on house, disco and techno as well as jazz, funk and Afrobeat, and they circulate widely among DJs across different scenes and generations.
Production and DJ work
Roy builds a reputation as both a producer and selector. His sets are known for moving across styles with ease, and he also works as a remixer for underground and major labels. Gilles Peterson describes him as a producer who does not fail to deliver, while Mr Scruff calls him a highly skilled selector with the ability to shift direction naturally.
His guest mixes appear on Gilles Peterson, Freerange Records, CO-OP, Jazz FM and Craig Charles’ BBC 6 Music Funk & Soul show. He also closes We Out Here Festival with Mr Scruff, and later joins him for a B2B tour.
Label work
Roy runs Vive La Musique, a label that focuses on reissues and reworks of rare eclectic music from different parts of the world. Its catalogue includes music drawn from Caribbean zouk, Congolese rumba, French jazz-fusion and South soul. The label’s releases attract attention from major tastemakers, and one release, In the Fast Lane, is noted for tracing links between Jean-Luc Ponty and the Detroit techno scene.
Releases and collaborators
Roy has forthcoming EPs on Mele’s Club Bad label and on Jimpster’s Freerange Records, alongside several remixes. His profile also grows through headline sets at venues and festivals including Fabric, Printworks, Defected Croatia, Hi Ibiza and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival.
