Ark

Ark is the recording name of Guillaume Berroyer, a French electronica producer born in 1972 and associated with minimal experimental house and electro. He is seen as an early figure in the development of experimental, groove-led house in France, with releases on Brif and later work on labels including Kif Records, Karat, Circus Company, Perlon and [PIAS] France.

Early work and background

Berroyer starts out as a guitarist in several 1980s funk bands, most notably Trankilou. Through that scene he works with Pepe Bradock, and his early collaborations also include Matthew Herbert and LoSoul. His first collaboration with Matthew Herbert and LoSoul is Belle Lurette in 1999.

Releases and collaborations

The Alleluyark EP series, released in 2003, helps establish his reputation within experimental house and techno. His 2005 album Caliente on Perlon brings further critical attention. He also records and collaborates with Cabanne as Copacabannark, with David Taieb as Shalark, with Mikael Weill as Les Cerveaux Lents, and with Dolibox. The verified membership details also identify Copacabannark and Shalark as associated names.

Remixes and later work

Ark has an extensive remix catalogue, reworking artists including Stephen Beaupre, Mr. Oizo, Mossa, Salif Keita, Slabb, Krikor, Fym, Cabanne and Robag Whrume. Perlon also releases Arkpocalypse Now in 2010.
