Archie Hamilton

Archie Hamilton is a London-based DJ and producer associated with tech house and deep house. His sound draws on a wide range of influences from childhood: his father introduces him to classical, jazz, acoustic, rhythm and blues, soul and opera, while his mother brings in punk and later acid house, including music by Hardfloor, Adonis, Marshall Jefferson, Jam & Spoon and the Orb. He also grows up listening to Terry Farley and Mrs Wood mix-tapes, and begins making basic compositions on eJay after saving for a pair of Numark belt-drive turntables.

Career beginnings

Hamilton’s first significant break comes in Oxford in 2006, when he secures a residency as the opening DJ at the Carling/O2 Academy. After moving back to London in 2008, he works at Defected and 360 Artist Management while continuing to build his profile through bookings at venues including Aquarium, Cargo, the Rhythm Factory, the Lightbox, the Doors and the Horse & Groom. A performance at Glade Festival in 2009 leads to a weekly residency at the T-Bar later that year.

Recordings and labels

By the end of 2009, Hamilton co-founds the Moscow Records imprint, where he plans to release his own music and handle A&R work. His early productions are also signed to Bullet Train, Monique Musiq and Uberbeat, and receive support from artists including Jet Project, DJ T. of Get Physical, and Terry Francis of fabric. He is also associated with MicroHertz, and the member name Arkityp is listed in connection with the project.

Style and reputation

His work in the studio and behind the decks reflects the mixed musical background he grows up with, combining club-oriented rhythms with broader musical references from across soul, punk and electronic music.
