Apollo Ghosts

Apollo Ghosts is a Canadian indie pop group from Nanaimo and Vancouver. The band forms in 2009 and is active from then to the present. Adrian Teacher is a member.

History and base

The group comes together in Vancouver, British Columbia, after Adrian Teacher, Amanda Panda and Jay Oliver meet in 2008 while looking for a rehearsal space on East Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver. Drawn by the sound coming from a studio on the second floor, they ask the landlord about the space and begin rehearsing there. Their routine becomes a cycle of practice, recording, going to shows, eating and sleeping before starting again.

Releases and style

The band’s early material leads to Hasting Sunrise and the follow-up EP Forgotten Triangle. Their music is described as combining tender truth, intellectual sing-along writing and lo-fi charm. The song “Mount Benson” is an ode to Nanaimo, British Columbia, and the surrounding local detail in the writing extends to references such as Wakesiah, Witchcraft Lake, the Sons of Norway and former mayor Frank Ney.

Reception

The group receives attention from writer Ryan Catbird, who names its early release his favourite listening of the year. Discorder Magazine calls Apollo Ghosts one of the best Vancouver bands of the decade, and Exclaim! describes them as criminally under-hyped after their initial vinyl run sells out.
